13rushes reviews: Max Factor’s Healthy Skin Harmony Foundation

Foundation is one of the most important, yet challenging, cosmetics items. Just a touch of the right foundation can even skin tone, blur imperfections, enhance radiance, and provide a smooth canvas for the rest of your makeup routine. However, with such a wide variety of formulations and shades across a spectrum of prices, it can be difficult to choose the right foundation to meet your needs.

In this post, we’ll be introducing the Healthy Skin Harmony Foundation from Max Factor. Although Max Factor is pretty new to the Singapore market, this polish company was founded 109 years ago in Poland! Since then Max Factor has combined science and make-up artistry for over one hundred years to create iconic products used in movies and theatres.

This smart foundation caught our eyes as it uses an intelligent formula that adapts to the environment. For instance, the hydration level for the foundation will increase in a dry environment (eg, air-con room).  It is said to suit all skin types too! Sounds pretty cool, don’t you agree? (P.s keep reading! We are doing a giveaway too)

Max Factor Healthy Skin Harmony Foundation features the following:

  • High-medium coverage
  • Semi-matte finish
  • Formula infused with vitamins for beautiful skin
  • Hybrid makeup-skincare product for radiant healthy looking skin
  • Intelligent formula to keep your skin hydrated for 24 hours
  • SPF20 to protect from sun exposure
  • Oil absorbers to control shine
  • Ability to adapt to stresses throughout the day

Shade

Globally, there are around 16 shades. Max Factor Singapore currently offers 6 shades- Light ivory (40), Nude (47), Natural (50), Sand (60), Golden (75) and Caramel (85).

Max Factor has kindly sent us 3 of their best selling shades as seen in the above photo. From left to right: Light ivory (40), Nude (47), Natural (50)

How to choose your shade:

The best way to find your flawless foundation shade is to test it out! Simply apply a thin layer of foundation to your jawline (clean/free from foundation) to assess the match. If you are able to seamlessly blend the new foundation into your skin, you’ve found your shade! If not…embrace your inner chemist, and custom mix your foundation! As most brands in Singapore carry limited shades, its likely that you won't get a perfect match straight out of the bottle. But fret not, simply solve this by mixing a lighter or darker shade of foundation (a pump or two of each on the back of the hand) to achieve the perfect match. Apart from just shade issues, it's sometimes hard to get the undertone of right. If your foundation turns out too pinkish, add a bit of yellow-based foundation to balance out the tone. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it right the first time—this method is all about trial and error. Practice makes perfect and even if its not perfect... we can still color correct with powders afterwards!

Also, do keep in mind that most of our faces have uneven exposure to the sun. This results in an uneven skin tone across our face. For instance, our forehead may have a darker shade than our jaw. Most foundation oxidizes due to the reaction of skin pigment with minerals or fats in the formulation. As a rule of thumb, test a foundation on your skin, wait 15 minutes, then go into daylight to see if the foundation is still a close match to your skintone. Foundation tends to oxidize with the natural heat from your skin after a few minutes, so it’s best to let the foundation set and then see it under the brightest light.

    Packaging

    Max factor foundation review, 13rushes

The foundation comes in a minimalistic rectangular glass bottle and clear cover. It comes with a pump, so application is easy! What we love most about, is this twist lock pump. Twisting the nozzle one way dispenses the foundation, and twisting back will lock it shut, preventing accidental leaks in your makeup pouch.

    Application

The foundation gave a semi-matte finish. The coverage is medium but buildable. The texture feels heavier than we thought it would be. However, it glides on very easily on the skin and feels more light-weight than it initially looks. We liked the finish - our oily skin finally looked rather 'dewy' but not greasy, but we needed to powder up later in the day because of our humid weather. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, it could settle in pores and lines, so make sure to prep the skin carefully before using it.

To begin, apply a small amount of foundation on the centre of your face and blend outwards. For this review, we've done up a quick comparison using 3 different foundation brushes with the Healthy Skin Harmony Foundation.

The Paddle Foundation offers higher degree of control, and the fullest coverage. To prevent streaks, we recommend blending foundation out in a criss-cross manner. This is a classic foundation brush and a favorite among many makeup artists.

For beginners however, we'll recommend the Angled Flat Foundation or Flat Top Foundation because of their ease of use.

The Angled Flat Foundation has a small angled brush head. This helps you to blend the undereye areas, sides of the face and hard-to-reach areas easily. It gives a medium-full coverage and a streak-free finish. If you prefer a precise brush, this is our recommendation.

The Flat Top Foundation gives the same airbrushed finish as the Angled Flat Foundation, but it has a bigger brush head and applies much more quickly. If you value speed over precision, we’ll recommend this brush.

    Longevity

Given our tropical humid climate, its common for most of us to have oiler skin. But beside so, the foundation has a decent lasting power. I still see it on my skin at the end of the day, although it does of course wears off a bit. But it still looks even and natural.

The Verdict:  While the shades provided by max factor are not a perfect matches with my warm yellow Asian skin tone, it does deliver the promised medium coverage. Besides, the shade issue can be easily remedied as mentioned above. Additionally, while the foundation appears radiant on application, i found myself blotting my face a little at mid-day possibly due to the hot humid weather in Singapore. That being said, i can imagine how nicely this foundation will settle for mature skin/ normal-dry skin types/ ladies who are always in air-conditioned rooms. I like how this foundation doesn't flake through the day! All in all, this 30ml foundation packs a lot of value for its price and we will definitely recommend this to someone who prefers a dewy, full coverage finish.
